Jada Henry's 'Dancing Angels'

My piece titled 'Dancing Angels' is a piece based on painting and collage. The depth in my piece is created by the multiple layers of color on the angels, the shading in the wings/ribbons, and the lines in the background. Using Complementary Colors, I painted/collaged the items against black surroundings to make the items pop. Both angels are painted using cool color, whiles the lines behind the two angels are collaged with warm colors. I designed my piece to have two objects, but in two opposite places giving my artwork asymmetrical balance and a sense of harmony. I used a mixture of shiny paper with matt paper to give two different feels. I worked tediously with the little details, for example, I had to paint around the swirls of the clothes with black. The small things take a lot of time, but it helps give depth to the artwork.

Mikayla's Collage and Painting "Urban Nature"

I think this collage and painting has good depth because I put shadows in the tree and in the city.  I love the color in this art piece because the ocean and leaves are really bright and fun.  I think that my painting is pretty balanced because there is the city, hedge, and leaves all the way across but the tree is good because it makes it less symmetrical and more natural looking.  I believe that I did a good job finding the right texture for the tree and leaves.  I like how the main part of the tree was made out of cut up pictures of pebbles.  I think the pebble-like texture gives it those little lines that trees have in the wood.  I really took my time collaging, painting and picking out the right textures and colors that I wanted to cut out from the magazines.  I think my hard work paid off and I am really proud of my artwork.

Minoru's "Blue Bird"

Alex collage and painting project: "Reflection"

I used many things to create depth in this piece such as adding rows of trees and painting the pond in such a way that it recedes back. I carefully placed different elements and considering the overall composition. My piece has many different values of color. I used the color wheel to pick complementary colors for the grass and sky. I designed my piece with balance and harmony through collage and painting. I tried to create texture with the collage and different painting techniques. I found inspiration from an art piece I saw on the New Orleans expedition. The artist used a similar collage style and also used silhouettes.

horse jumping

My painting collage project is titled “Jumping Horse”. It is based on me jumping my horse when I get more advanced. I created depth in my project by have a foreground, middle ground, and background by making the back grass darker then the grass in the front. I also put more collaged pieces in the front then I did in the back.  I used space well by filling in all of it and didn’t leave any of it blank. I created value, which made it look 3D by making the horse’s stomach round and the log different shades to give it shape. I used color by using different shades and not making it monotonous. I used different shades for the grass and accented the black and white spots with gray. I balanced my photo by scattering the collage and painting the grass to make them look even in the back ground. I used texture by painting the grass with little strokes to make it look like each real grass. This piece is my favorite horse painting I have ever done. My sketch was simple but it took me a long time since I was patient and careful. I am glad with the results.

Tita's "Composition Diamond"

Mondrian inspired my piece. This art project is titled, “Composition Diamond” which is very similar to Mondrian’s titles. For this piece I use different textures and different colors. What I used for the different textures was wall paper. I was really careful when I chose the colors because it was hard to make them complements to the textures on the corners. I think this is well done because the colors are great and the way your eyes go from one color to another makes the piece be balanced. I balanced the collage when I located some of the pieces of paper inside the squares, so I could have some textures in the corner and some in the middle. I loved it :)

MIkayla's Collage Project "Beach Bonfire"

Mikayla's Typography Project "Laugh At Your Mistakes"

I think typography should be expressive as long as the artist has put a lot of thought and personality into the project.  Rather then a picture painting a thousand words, these words can paint a thousand pictures.  If a bold, fun, crazy person has made a typography piece that is bold, fun, and crazy, I would consider it expressive.  If someone just put a whole bunch of words on a page,  I would see the text as nothing more then that.

My Typography is expressive because, like my painting says, I am not afraid to make mistakes.  In fact, some of my mistakes that I have made previously made my art better.  In this piece, the paint represents the "mistake".  In this case, the fallen paint buckets make the art much more interesting to look at.  The splattered paint make the painting fun and colorful.

Lillie's "Tiger Stripes"

My collage piece is called “Tiger Stripes”. In this Painting/collage I made it dynamic by having different shades on parts like the noes. I used all my space by filling it with collage and paint. On this project I used different value by spending lots of time on mixing different colors of paint and finding different color to collage with so that I could find the right shade. For the balance of this piece I mostly used paint to get the correct color but for parts that were white and the eyes I collaged. To add texture I used white wallpaper to show the texture of the tigers fur. I also used a special brush to make a nice texture on the nose to also show the fur texture. I spent a lot of time on this project by first making sketches and played with different ways to paint. I also took along time to collage my tiger and paid close attention to detail. I put my best into this art and I am glad it turned out the way I expected.

Zeecy's Collage Project

"Morning Routines"
My project was inspired by Banksy, the anonymous street artist (graffiti artist) from the UK. I mimicked his style by making stencil and spray painting black paint on a poster paper. I collaged the room behind the girl and drew in her reflection on the mirror. The outer edges of the room are made piece by piece, leaving for open interpretation: Is the room falling apart or coming together? The frame created a camera or telescope effect.
I created depth by using extremely thin lines of paper to create the drawers and counter, since the main point of the piece is the girl. I decided not to use colour for my piece because I wanted it to appear simple, yet detailed down to the reflections in the mirror and shapes I used to collage. I didn't want any colour scheme to overrule the simplicity of the picture.
I balanced out my piece by making the main event of the picture (the girl tying her hair) spray paint and details around her collaged. And although the spray paint is the main point, I took more time on collaging than stenciling, so that also created a balance in what I was doing.
I used texture in my piece. I made the girl flat, but also the tiny flecks of paint around the edges made her look not as 2D. For the background, I layered the paper on the drawers and mirrors, and used specifically white paper with words that would appear faded when I glued them down, so the picture wouldn't be just white.
I usually work quickly, but this time I took my time to cut out the stencil and collage the background.

Emma's "The Duck Reflection"

My painting/collage is of a duck and its reflection in the pond. For reference i used a picture of a duck, that i took myself. I focused on making the painting part of my piece look life-like. I also created depth in my piece by transitioning from a dark blue to a light blue. Also the ducks reflection in the pond helps to create depth and make it look for realistic. As you can see on the ducks head i used three different shades of green to make the ducks head pop out and look 3D. The collage seemed to be over powering the duck so i painted the reflection of the duck and some ripples in the water to create balance. I used many different textures in my collage to help bring the piece to life. I was very patient when working on this piece and i am happy with how it turned out. :)

Allie's Collage Project "Calla Lily in Bloom"

My piece is a close-up of a quite popular flower called a calla lily. For inspiration I looked at the vibrant pictures of flowers painted by Vincent van Gogh. It is dynamic because it shows the varying levels of shading seen if one were to look right at a calla lily in real life. Though it focuses on the head of the flower, it also includes the stem wrapping up the side of it. The stigma and the bright green stem stand out because of the texture and bright colouring contrasting with the white of the body of the flower. The background is a dark, purple-blue which seems to be swarming around the flower, caressing its petals with the somber shade of night. Most of the picture is painted, but the details, i.e. the stem and the sigma, pop out because I collaged them. The collage consists not only of flat paper and gives the piece life. The texture really gives it life. The collaged parts have various shades of colour in them. I worked very hard on this piece and revised it several times before I executed the final details. I feel that the piece demonstrates just how hard I worked on it.

Natalie Espinosa's Collage Project
This project took a lot of work to get every detail right, but it was worth it in the end and I am happy with the outcome.  The branches and background were painted over many different times to get just the right colors and 3D effect of the tree and eye. In the beginning I had decided to do a tree with teardrops coming from the branches, with bright colors on the sides to represent different emotions and contrast between neutral and bright colors.  In the end I decided to keep the background bright colors and keep the tree neutral, but make it seem like the eye was apart of the tree. I feel like it shows that things might look different from the outside but you have to look closer to see what’s actually there. I painted over the whole painting with modge podge so that the whole thing had the same shiny exterior. I looked at many different images on Google for the eye but ended up painting over the image I had copied from Google and making it my own with help from Christy. My inspiration came from people’s emotions and how they look on the outside verses how they feel on the inside. It also came from the fact that people usually look once but don’t bother to look closer at what else is there be it in a person, objects or even art pieces. To understand the art piece you have to look closer or you won’t understand the painting.

Trinh Huynh -The Light Path

The title of my art piece is "The Light Path". It describes a new hope for people at the end of the road after all cheerlessness and loneliness. The inspiration for my piece came from Van Gogh. His life was dominated by a restless and depressive mental illness.  However, it was this illness that gave fired his artistic works with great joy and, sadly, equally great despair. I like how Van Gogh used thick layers of color to present the depth of his piece, so I tried to add different tones of color and different materials to create my depth. I painted the trees, sky, and grass and used wallpaper to collage the path. The shadow of the trees and the darker part of the path makes my piece have a greater depth. I also used different colors to represent green grass to make my piece more attractive. I struggled for a little while then finally found the way to describe my words.

Circle Fun!

The title of my project is “Circle Fun!” My hanging sculpture will be located in Embarcadero in down town San Diego for two of many reasons. The first one being the wind will allow my sculpture to spin around and around and look spectacular! Secondly, the Embarcadero is a place where all sorts of public art pieces, every shape and size, are placed. When traveling by the Embarcadero’s many pieces, you will come across mine, a rainbow of circles. The statement behind making my sculpture is to find the color of your life. Everywhere you look, there is color and I want people to see a variety of colors in my piece. To walk up to “Circle Fun” and say, “Wow, that is a lot of color!” And then turn around and notice all the colors around them. People will be able to step under my sculpture and emerge through it and looking up, circles of color will be looming above them. My circles will be made out of colored glass just like the work of Dale Chihuly’s. The sun will reflect off and shine color every where!

The Hanging Beaver

The title of my project is called “The Hanging Beaver.” My sculpture would be planted in the ground outside of The Ruben H. Fleet Science Center. My statement behind making this sculpture is to limit animal testing. This piece represents that statement because it shows a colossal beaver staring in a building window. When we do animal testing we are either hurting or killing animals. This represents that animals are strong creatures and will seek vengeance if harmed.  People would interact with it by first seeing it and probably laughing and then as they look at it really actually think about the artworks meaning. The real sculpture would be made out of mainly metal. The building would be made just like a regular building and look exactly like a regular building too. The beaver also would be made out of metal and look almost EXACTLY like a real beaver. There could also be added fake fur on the beaver to finish the effect

My piece titled "Blanket of Kali" is a mixture of collage and painting. The inspiration was a mixture of a few of my cats (Kali and Ariel) and Pop Art done by Andy Warhol. Before drawing out the cat on the canvas, and especially before sketching the eyes, I searched for the perfect examples and used them to create my shapes. I used depth by using thicker, brighter colors for the cat to make her easier to see. You can tell that the cat is the focus of the piece and that she’s lying in such a way as to create a darker shadow in front of her. There was no unused space, everything down to the eyes was either painted or collaged. My colors are contrasting to make your eyes catch on the cat and her eyes. The background is a darker purple and pink, like the blanket on my mom’s bed at home. The cat has darker grey to match the darker background, but also includes a tan or orange-ish color. The strokes that show the individual pieces of fur on the cat are just slightly darker than the regular colors. Lastly, the eyes really pop out at you because they are white with hints of the purple that’s in the background. I believe I balanced my work by having the main focus be on the painted cat, but the details of the face and the background are collaged. The colors work well with each other and the space isn’t used awkwardly or off-center. The background blanket of my art is made with strips of textured wallpaper that I used a wash over to make them purple. The strips overlap in horizontal stripes, and the wavy streaks of confetti paper add to the design of the blanket. It was created to look like the one in my house, but it turned out with a different swirled feeling than the straight-striped original. I took as much time each class period as was necessary to complete my project perfectly, and I feel that my final product is a wonderful representation of my cat Kali sitting on a blanket on my mom’s bed. I tried my best to stay patient although I am impatient in nature. My original design changed several times; looking at my first idea you’d be shocked how far it has come. I’m proud of the collaged painting “Blanket of Kali”.
